June 17/09 -
Last fall the community voiced its frustrations at a public meeting,
claiming that promised Olympic benefits were not being delivered -
including getting a new ferry terminal, a cruise ship to house media or
Olympic workers, and making Squamish a transportation hub for spectators.
At one point Squamish even offered to house the Paralympic hockey and
curling events after the facility became too expensive to build in
Whistler. Gardner acknowleged that there was history between Squamish and
VANOC, but he believes the money, given at a time of fiscal restraint by
Olympic organizers, is a recognition of the town's growing importance to
the success of the 2010 Games. "I am very pleased that VANOC has
acknowledged the role of the community of Squamish in the 2010 Winter
Olympic and Paralympic Games," he said. |
| Whistler’s biggest conference
boosts business Business was booming over the weekend as
Whistler played host to its biggest conference to date. There was an
uncharacteristic early June hustle and bustle in the village streets as
patios buzzed in the beaming sunshine and shop tills rang up sales.
By all accounts, the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) annual
conference from June 5 to 8 was a great success. Borrowing the words
from a colleague, Mayor Ken Melamed said: "I think we hit a home run.
It may have been one of the most exciting four days in Whistler for
me." The mayor said he couldn't walk anywhere without being
stopped and complimented on the well-run conference, the beautiful resort,
and on his welcoming speech. Whistler hosted more than 1,700
delegates over the course of four days. An additional 750 companions were
also part of the program. The municipality estimated a $6 million
spin off in economic activity to the resort. |

22/09 Pierre Lueders and Kaillie
Humphries Win Two-Man and Women's Canadian Championship Titles
WHISTLER, B.C. — Edmonton Eskimos running
back Jesse Lumsden became a national two-man bobsleigh champion
with pilot Pierre Lueders on Saturday at the Whistler
Sliding Centre.
Lueders, with Lumsden on the brakes, clocked
a two-run combined time of one minute, 44.73 seconds to finish in
first place.
The six-foot-two, 226-pound football star
has been training this week with the Canadian bobsleigh team. His
times have been on par with some of the team's veterans. Lumsden
signed last month with the Eskimos after playing four CFL seasons
with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.
"When I volunteered to give bobsleigh a
try, I never figured I would end up at this point. I think any
athlete would take full advantage of the opportunity to possibly
represent his or her country at the Olympics," Lumsden said.

5/09 Hugh Smythe
announces his retirement
One of the founding fathers of Whistler, and "one of the smartest
guys in the ski business," is retiring. Hugh Smythe, who moved to
Whistler in 1966 at the age of 19 to work as a ski patroller, will be
stepping down as Senior Vice President of Intrawest Mountain Resorts on
March 12. But he emphasized he's not going anywhere. He will remain an
advisor to Intrawest and is looking forward to the next year, particularly
the Olympics. "I want to experience that as a local." Pique
